Mercy Corps, with support from the Howard G. Buffett Foundation, is expanding its Ukraine Agriculture Support Program to specifically support women farmers.
The program focuses on providing women with access to agricultural knowledge, advisory support, and financial capital to increase productivity and income while strengthening resilience to current and future shocks. The key objectives of the program include delivering comprehensive training in entrepreneurship and specialized agricultural skills, offering practical learning opportunities through study trips to advanced farms, and providing competitive financial assistance to help women start or grow their agricultural businesses.
Women who successfully complete the training may also take part in study trips to advanced farms, allowing them to gain hands-on experience, with all travel and related expenses covered. Additionally, participants can apply for competitive financial assistance ranging from 3,000 to 7,000 USD to start or expand their agricultural businesses. This combination of training, practical experience, and financial support aims to empower women farmers, increase agricultural productivity, and strengthen resilience across affected regions of Ukraine.
The program is implemented in partnership with organizations across Ukraine, including the Eastern Ukrainian Agricultural Advisory Service in Donetsk, Poltava, and Cherkasy regions; the PERSHI Charitable Foundation in Zaporizhzhya, Dnipropetrovsk, and Kirovohrad regions; the LASKA Charitable Foundation in Mykolaiv, Kherson, and Odessa regions; and the SUPPORT AGRO Charitable Foundation in Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, and Kyiv regions. It is open to local residents and internally displaced persons who have experienced the consequences of war, who head a household or an existing agribusiness, or who are motivated to start a business in agricultural production on land plots of up to 150 hectares.
Participants in the program will undergo a seven-week online training program covering both entrepreneurial skills and specialized agricultural topics. The entrepreneurship training includes fundamental to advanced business concepts such as planning, accounting, marketing, branding, business registration, and financing. The agricultural training offers guidance in areas including vegetable and berry growing, horticulture, beekeeping, poultry, cattle, pig, rabbit, sheep, and goat farming. The curriculum is designed to be accessible for women of varying education levels and prior experience, using simple language and visual materials, and recorded sessions are available for convenience.
