Deadline: January 20, 2026
The European Commission has launched a call under the Batt4EU Partnership, focusing on the development of sustainable and design-to-cost batteries with (energy-)efficient manufacturing processes and based on advanced and safer materials.
The call specifies a budget of EUR 24.00 million, with an expected EU contribution of around EUR 8.00 million per project, aiming to fund three projects in total .
This initiative is positioned within the broader objectives of cross-sectoral solutions for the climate transition. The expected outcomes include increasing the competitiveness and strategic autonomy of the EU battery sector while maximising sustainability, enhancing local and circular supply chains by reducing dependency on critical raw materials and upscaling processing capacity including for recycled materials, fostering an integrated European battery sector for high-performance batteries from design to end of life with reduced environmental impact, improving resilience of the EU energy system and facilitating integration of renewable energy sources through energy storage, and ensuring affordable and reliable batteries to accelerate the penetration of electric vehicles and storage systems .
The scope of this call emphasizes developing sustainable batteries that are cost-effective by design, incorporate advanced and safer materials, and rely on energy-efficient manufacturing processes. Proposals are expected to explore methods that can address sustainability challenges throughout the value chain, from material sourcing to production and lifecycle management.
Aligned with the Batt4EU Partnership, the opportunity supports Europe’s strategic ambition to strengthen its battery industry, reduce reliance on imported critical raw materials, and ensure safer, more environmentally responsible energy storage solutions. The funding is designed to stimulate innovation, competitiveness, and resilience in a sector crucial to Europe’s clean energy and mobility transitions.
