Deadline: January 06, 2026
The call for proposals aims to accelerate the development and deployment of AI and digital solutions in the biotechnology sector driven by health data, ensuring its secure and responsible use through the European Health Data Space (EHDS) and leveraging AI Factories to augment these efforts.
The general objective is to accelerate AI and digital solution development in biotech through secure use of health data via EHDS and AI Factories. Specific objectives include creating a multistakeholder platform for collaboration and knowledge-sharing among biotech industry, data holders, healthcare providers, patient organizations, regulatory bodies, and AI Factories; identifying and prioritizing promising AI applications in biotech; rapid prototyping and testing of AI-driven biotech solutions with AI Factory resources; analyzing challenges like data quality, regulatory, ethical issues and scientific validation; developing concrete recommendations for coordinated EHDS development; leveraging existing initiatives like 1 Million Genomes and data infrastructures; piloting roles of health data infrastructures under EHDS frameworks; promoting adoption of standardized data formats; developing case studies on successful AI applications; incorporating AI Factory expertise; and monitoring progress toward objectives.
The intersection of health data and artificial intelligence (AI) has the potential to drive significant breakthroughs in the biotech industry, transforming human health and economic growth. The EU is well-positioned to harness this, but challenges exist such as the need for high-quality data, secure data access frameworks, and streamlined regulatory processes. The Regulation EU 2025327 on the EHDS provides a secure framework for health data access and reuse across the Union, supporting innovation by facilitating access to high-quality health data, including genomics, cancer, and brain research datasets.
This call supports a coordinated approach to leverage health data and research infrastructures, including genomics, cancer datasets, metabolomics, proteomics, and clinical trial networks, in the context of EHDS frameworks to accelerate biotech innovation. Collaboration with AI Factories is essential to integrate health data insights with AI capabilities, enabling next-generation biotech solutions and rapid innovation from concept to healthcare application.
The action encourages the establishment of a multistakeholder platform to facilitate collaboration and knowledge sharing among biotech industry players, healthcare providers, regulatory bodies, and AI developers, and to tackle challenges related to data quality, privacy, intellectual property, regulatory compliance, and scientific validation. The initiative will also promote standardized data formats and frameworks to enhance data quality and interoperability, leveraging existing projects and AI Factory capabilities.
Expected results include accelerated innovation in the EU biotech industry, increased collaboration, improved healthcare outcomes through AI-driven biotech solutions, clearer regulatory pathways for AI application development, and enhanced competitiveness of the EU biotech sector. Deliverables involve stakeholder mapping, landscape analysis of health data use in biotech AI, strategic roadmap development, case studies showcasing successful AI applications, and pilot projects to test health data infrastructure roles under EHDS.
The estimated EU contribution for this topic is € 14,386,810.
