Deadline Date: January 09, 2026
The Canada Water Agency offers a significant opportunity through its Lake Winnipeg Freshwater Ecosystem Initiative to support Indigenous-led stewardship and collaborative action in the Lake Winnipeg basin.
Under the stream titled Cultivating Collaboration and Indigenous-Driven Action, the program focuses on strengthening Indigenous leadership, enhancing community capacity, and improving freshwater management across the region.
This funding call invites letters of intent until January 9, 2026, with selected applicants later submitting full proposals. Approved projects may begin as early as April 1, 2026 and run until March 31, 2029, providing a multi-year framework for meaningful environmental and cultural work. The program supports initiatives that advance community-based monitoring, promote traditional knowledge, encourage intergenerational learning, and foster cooperative governance between Indigenous and non-Indigenous partners.
Eligible activities may include water-quality monitoring and training, youth engagement programs, land-based learning, ceremonial gatherings connected to stewardship, and joint initiatives blending Indigenous knowledge systems with Western science. Funding can be used for human resources, materials, equipment, travel, community activities, and other project-related needs, ensuring communities have the flexibility to design projects that reflect their priorities and values.
Through this initiative, the Canada Water Agency acknowledges the essential role of Indigenous leadership in safeguarding freshwater ecosystems. It offers communities and organisations a meaningful opportunity to shape decision-making, revitalize traditional stewardship practices, and contribute to the long-term health and sustainability of Lake Winnipeg and its watershed.
