Understanding Science Funding Programme provides financial support for communication activities that make research and scientific results understandable, accessible, and engaging to the public.
The focus areas of this opportunity include presenting research and scientific results in an understandable and easily accessible manner, making science and technology more understandable and trustworthy in an innovative way, and increasing public interest in science education and careers.
This funding supports payroll costs, costs for services such as fees for speakers or knowledge procurement, travel expenses for speakers, moderators, or lecturers, and the acquisition of machines, licenses, or intellectual property rights. Eligible applicants include universities, universities of applied sciences, associations, non-university research institutions, and organisations active in the social, research, and educational sectors. Funding can cover employees and self-employed contractors, partners and owners of small enterprises, and external services related to the development proposal.
The maximum funding available per development proposal is 60,000 euros, with a funding rate of up to 75% and a minimum project value of 10,000 euros. Up to 50% of the approved funding amount can be paid upfront, and the maximum project duration is two years. Projects managed by qualified women are eligible for an additional women’s bonus of 5,000 euros.
Applications are assessed by an independent jury based on defined criteria, and the Vienna Business Agency communicates the outcome. Required documents include a completed online application form, an application confirmation, a de minimis declaration, and the latest financial statements or income statements. Partnership applications are permitted, with the lead organisation responsible for fund allocation.
