The Multicultural Grassroots Initiatives supports activities that strengthen social cohesion and enhance multicultural participation across Australia.
The focus areas of this programme are multicultural community-led grassroots organisations have increased capacity to engage in government grant funding processes and support a cohesive multicultural society; increased tolerance and understanding of cultural diversity and reduced instances of discrimination and racism; increased rates of social participation by multicultural community members; and increased rates of culturally diverse Australians expressing a sense of belonging.
The programme offers two funding streams. Events may receive up to $10,000 per year for activities that showcase elements of cultural heritage to the broader community. These may include cultural festivals, multicultural festivals or Harmony Week events that promote understanding, awareness and appreciation of racial, religious and cultural diversity. Programmes may receive up to $40,000 per year to support initiatives that encourage social participation among isolated community members or facilitate interactions and collaborations across cultural, ethnic and social groups. Eligible activities include cultural or intercultural sports programmes, art projects and group programmes for youth, parents, women or men that help build unified relationships.
The grant supports organisations committed to fostering stronger community ties and meaningful cross-cultural engagement. Activities funded through this opportunity aim to reduce discrimination, enhance belonging and create environments where multicultural communities can participate actively and confidently.
Eligibility is open to companies, cooperatives, incorporated associations, Indigenous corporations and statutory entities. These organisations must demonstrate the capacity to deliver community-focused initiatives that align with the programme’s intended outcomes.
