The South Australian Government has launched the 2025 SA Gas Initiative, a $17.5 million program designed to accelerate investment in gas projects across the state through targeted competitive grants.
The objectives of the Fund are to support projects, studies and other activities of a public interest nature which enhance energy resources industry projects that will assist with meeting South Australia’s mid to long-term energy needs and transition to clean energy to support the achievement of Australia’s greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets. The aggregate of grants will stimulate investment in an optimised and diverse portfolio of projects addressing: Increasing gas supply, including: Enhancing geological knowledge of areas within close proximity to existing infrastructure, New technologies to lift productivity, and improve efficiency of gas production, Gas capacity, including: Gas storage solutions, Supporting infrastructure to unlock new gas supply or improve deliverability.
This initiative aims to boost South Australia’s gas sector by funding a mix of projects that enhance exploration, production, and infrastructure capabilities. It seeks to strengthen the state’s energy security while aligning with national clean energy and emissions reduction goals. By supporting gas-related studies and technological advancements, the initiative intends to increase productivity, efficiency, and long-term sustainability in the industry.
Grant funding under this initiative will cover up to 50% of total eligible project expenditure, capped at $2.5 million per project. A higher grant amount may be considered for projects exceeding $5 million in total expenditure, provided that the applicant demonstrates greater expected outcomes contributing to South Australia’s mid to long-term energy requirements. Distribution of funds will be assessed individually and may follow a phased approach linked to agreed project milestones, as outlined in the grant agreement.
Eligible project expenditure must directly relate to the project’s execution and may include exploration, drilling, production, infrastructure, or technology development costs incurred during the approved project period.
