The European Commission is requesting grant applications to develop turbofan engines for loyal wingman and combat UAVs, delivering optimal thrust and power for diverse missions.
The focus areas, include developing engines in the 25-35 kN thrust range for loyal wingman and UCAV applications; meeting storage, deployment, and operational requirements; ensuring engines operate on kerosene, hydrogen, and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF); addressing the lack of ITAR-free engines suitable for European loyal wingman drones; ensuring sufficient reliability and cost-effectiveness for attritable combat drones; evaluating potential civil, military, and commercial applications; supporting growth and additional power offtakes including bleed air and electrical needs; generating and integrating knowledge through studies and design activities; and contributing to STEP objectives in defence technologies.
This call topic targets the development of engines that meet the unique performance requirements of loyal wingman drones, which are intended to be attritable rather than fully expendable. Reliable and cost-effective engine solutions are essential to ensure operational efficiency in combat conditions while maintaining acceptable loss rates.
The project will explore engines capable of operating on multiple fuel types, including kerosene, hydrogen, and sustainable aviation fuels, to increase flexibility and sustainability in future aerial missions. Engines must provide sufficient thrust and electrical power to support mission requirements and potential additional offtakes.
By advancing turbofan technology in the 25-35 kN class, the initiative aims to fill a critical gap in European capabilities for unmanned loyal wingman and combat aerial vehicles, supporting both military and potential civilian or hybrid applications.
The indicative budget for this topic is EUR 20,000,000 within an overall budget of EUR 50,000,000. Eligible applicants must be legal entities established in EU Member States, including overseas countries and territories, or in listed EEA countries and EDF-associated countries. Applicants must have executive management structures in eligible countries and must not be controlled by non-associated third countries unless approved guarantees are provided.
