Deadline: October 27, 2025
Dutch film distributors can now apply for project grants for the theatrical release of foreign arthouse films or documentaries selected at an international film festival in the Netherlands, with the aim of reducing financial risks and supporting cultural diversity in cinema.
The focus of this scheme is on distinctive, artistic, high-quality, and distinctive films that contribute to the (cultural) diversity of the Dutch film scene, including high-quality foreign children’s and youth films. Each year, eight foreign arthouse films are selected for a promotional and marketing grant, which provides a larger release budget for the selected films to reach their target audience in the Netherlands.
This opportunity is designed for Dutch film distributors with proven experience in releasing high-quality arthouse films or documentaries in Dutch cinemas. Eligible applicants must be film distributors that are legal entities established for at least two years in the Kingdom of the Netherlands, the EU, the EEA, or Switzerland, with a consistent track record of releasing films in Dutch cinemas and theaters. Sole proprietorships and general partnerships are not eligible.
Applicants can request a maximum grant of €20,000 per project. Each year, a total of eight project grants are available, spread over four application rounds, with no more than two awarded per round. The overall subsidy ceiling for this scheme is €160,000 per year. A maximum of 15% of the grant may be allocated to hired personnel and overhead, while at least 50% of marketing, print, and advertising costs must be demonstrably covered by the applicant.
To qualify, the film or documentary must be considered by the advisory committee and the board as a distinct, artistic, and high-quality international production with added value for Dutch film culture. It must also have been selected at a leading international film festival within one year of the submission deadline. The marketing and distribution plan must demonstrate a realistic and well-considered strategy to ensure optimal national reach. Additionally, the release date must be scheduled at least eight weeks after the submission deadline, and the applicant must match the Fund’s contribution 100% in Prints & Advertising.
Applications are limited to one per distributor per round, with a maximum of two grants per distributor per year. If a film subsequently secures a Films on the Move distribution grant from Creative Europe MEDIA, the Film Fund subsidy will be withdrawn, and the distributor must notify the Fund.
