Deadline Date: April 17, 2026
The Foam Recycling Coalition is now accepting applications to support public and private entities in expanding the collection and recycling of post-consumer foam polystyrene.
The program focuses on increasing foam recycling by funding equipment and program enhancements, supporting entities that operate material recovery facilities, manage residential curbside or drop-off recycling programs, expanding the acceptance of foam polystyrene for recycling, ensuring proper implementation of recycling plans within six months, communicating program updates to households, reporting collection and processing volumes, and committing to collection, processing, and marketing of foam polystyrene for at least three years.
Funding for the grant program comes from contributions by members of the Foam Recycling Coalition, a special interest group of the Foodservice Packaging Institute. Grant amounts are determined on a case-by-case basis depending on equipment needs, with a maximum of $50,000 per grant. No cash match is required, though grantees may incur additional costs for site preparation, conveying systems, electrical infrastructure, freight, and installation.
Eligible entities include public and private organizations in the U.S. and Canada that operate material recovery facilities, manage residential curbside or drop-off recycling programs, and are prepared to accept, collect, process, and market foam polystyrene. Communities with existing foam bans are not eligible to apply. Programs that already accept foam polystyrene but wish to expand their capacity are also considered.
Applicants must be ready to implement required equipment for recycling within six months of grant approval, integrate foam polystyrene acceptance into regular communications and educational materials, and provide detailed reporting on volumes collected, processed, and marketed. Grant recipients must maintain foam polystyrene collection and processing for a minimum of three years.
