The Video Games Business Development Program is a partnership between Creative BC and Canada Media Fund (CMF) designed to open new funding opportunities to support the success and growth of B.C.-based video game companies.
The focus of the program is to support B.C.-owned and -controlled companies developing their own creative IP, and to encourage company growth for mid-level and experienced companies beyond project-by-project funding.
Maximum request per application up to $200,000. Overall Funding Envelope Available $1,000,000.
This program applies to for-profit companies incorporated in British Columbia or Canada with their head office in British Columbia who meet the Canadian ownership and control criteria, whose primary business is the creation of video games for digital platforms. Applicants must show experience through a minimum number of commercially published titles and meet financial criteria or be startups with experienced ownership.
Funding eligibility requires a clear and achievable business development plan that includes promotion, marketing, user acquisition, labor, technology, content design, online content deployment, travel, legal and consulting fees, foreign market expansion, and playtesting for quality assurance. Eligible costs must largely support British Columbia-based goods and services.
The program excludes support for capital projects, working capital replenishment, expenses already funded by other Creative BC or CMF programs, and development of content not fully owned and controlled by the applicant.
Applications entail an online submission with a business development plan focusing on measurable impact, previous work history, company information, project slate, key team members, budget, and plans for hiring British Columbians. Successful applicants enter contracts detailing timeline, payment schedules, and deliverables for a funding period typically 12 months.
The program emphasizes inclusivity, promoting inclusive practices as an economic initiative to broaden audiences and optimize workforce productivity. Applicants must also adhere to codes of conduct ensuring safe and respectful work environments.
Funding decisions are competitive, based on company track record, clarity of objectives, and financial stability. There is no appeal process, and recipients must publicly acknowledge the support from Creative BC and CMF.
