Deadline Date: June 30, 2027
The NSW Waste Rebates Program is requesting grant applications to support businesses and organizations in implementing equipment or technology to reduce, reuse, or recycle waste and achieve the NSW Waste and Materials Strategy targets.
The program focuses on reducing total waste generated by 10% per person by 2030, achieving an 80% average recovery rate from all waste streams by 2030, tripling the plastics recycling rate by 2030, phasing out problematic and unnecessary plastics by 2025, halving the amount of organic waste sent to landfill by 2030, and significantly increasing the use of recycled content by governments and industry. Its objectives are to avoid or divert new tonnes of waste from landfill, help businesses transition to a circular economy by prioritizing waste avoidance, reuse, and upcycling, support the phase-out of problematic and single-use plastics, and reduce organic waste going to landfill while preparing for mandatory food-waste collections from targeted businesses starting in 2025.
Rebates range from $1,000 up to $50,000, covering up to 50% of the capital cost of small-scale, on-site recycling equipment or technology that aligns with the program objectives. Eligible applicants include businesses that operate a commercial and industrial waste service in NSW, hold a valid ABN, employ one or more full-time employees in NSW, and either send C&I waste to landfill or process/recycle C&I waste generated by businesses. Registered charities, not-for-profits, public entities including schools and hospitals, and government organizations are also eligible.
All equipment or technology funded must be installed on the applicant’s property and operational within three months of signing a Funding Deed with the EPA. The equipment must support program objectives, not have been ordered or installed prior to rebate approval, and either divert or avoid new tonnes of waste from landfill. For food organics, applicants must demonstrate additional recovery, reduced contamination, or improved efficiency. Equipment must meet the EPA’s rebate funding thresholds and remain in operation for the term of the Funding Deed, with leased equipment maintained for a minimum of 12 months. A minimum co-contribution of 50% of the purchase or lease cost is required.
Organizations interested in applying can contact the EPA’s Business Programs unit for guidance on eligibility, the application process, and accessing trained Bin Trim assessors to improve the likelihood of a successful application.
