The Alfred Kordelin Foundation offers grants to individuals and organizations for projects that strengthen the position of researched and expert-based knowledge, promote critical thinking, and foster active citizenship.
The project aims to strengthen critical thinking by helping the public assess information accurately, distinguish trustworthy sources, and build confidence in science, expertise, and democratic processes. It seeks to enhance community and social cohesion by empowering individuals and groups to engage in public debate, participate in decision-making, and bridge divides between different communities. The initiative promotes international understanding and a global perspective by fostering tolerance, appreciation of diverse cultures, and highlighting the importance of international cooperation in areas such as sustainable development and human rights. Additionally, it focuses on developing practical skills by providing training, tools, and resources to improve literacy, digital competence, and media literacy.
The Alfred Kordelin Foundation supports larger entities such as series of articles, publications, and related events. Individual publications or articles are not eligible for funding. Applications are open to Finnish individuals, individuals operating in Finland, and registered entities with a business ID. A working group can also apply if the official applicant is an entity, which applies on behalf of the group members.
Grant applications are evaluated on the knowledge and expertise generated, the target audience and its engagement, the significance of the project, and how information produced will be shared and integrated into public discourse. Multi-disciplinary approaches and collaboration between different actors are considered advantages. Applications are assessed in two pools: grants for individuals and community projects, with evaluation proceeding in three stages by division experts, joint assessment, and final board decision.
Individuals may apply for a personal work grant of EUR 45,000 for 12–18 months of full-time work, including both working and expense shares. Communities can apply for working or cost grants ranging from EUR 50,000 to 100,000 for projects lasting up to 24 months. Grants cover occupational pension, accident, and life insurance but cannot be requested solely for expenses.
Applications must include required attachments such as curriculum vitae, work or project plans, expressions of interest from project partners, budgets, and financial statements. Incomplete or late applications will not be accepted. Approved projects must start in the following calendar year and grant use must be reported in accordance with Kordelin Foundation guidelines.
