The Regional Event Fund has been created to strengthen Tairāwhiti’s reputation as a vibrant destination by supporting events that reflect the region’s identity, stimulate economic activity, and foster long-term sector capability.
Its core objective is to attract and build a well-rounded portfolio of events that showcase the region’s strengths, values, and culture while aligning with local visitor attraction strategies. By backing quality, sustainable, and responsible events, the fund aims not only to enrich community life but also to grow the regional economy through increased visitor activity.
To be eligible for funding, events must be held within the Tairāwhiti region and must draw visitors from outside the area. The organisation behind the event must be a legal entity, such as a trust, company, or incorporated society, and may be required to provide proof of this status. Applicants must disclose any debt owed by the organising entity and declare any additional funding or donations associated with the event. Events must still be pending at the time of fund allocation, and organisers need to meet all government and council regulatory requirements, including permits and consents. In addition, applicants must demonstrate that their event is sustainable and will remain viable even in the absence of Regional Event Fund support.
The fund is not available for private functions, events that do not attract outside visitors, political gatherings, or events promoting religious or political purposes. Activities that exclude, offend, or pose risks to the community are also ineligible, as are any events that have already taken place. Events that failed to meet obligations under previous funding agreements may be excluded unless corrective actions have been taken to the satisfaction of the fund administrators. Moreover, events must be able to show financial, environmental, cultural, and social sustainability to be considered for support.
Through this fund, event organisers have an opportunity to elevate Tairāwhiti’s profile, enhance visitor experiences, and contribute to a thriving, resilient regional economy.
