Deadline Date: December 04, 2025
Natural Resources Canada has launched a Call for Proposals under the Energy Innovation Program to fund applied research, development, and demonstration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) solutions that accelerate energy technology innovation and reduce costs in advancing clean energy.
The focus areas and objectives of the Call include: Catalyze national expertise to develop and use novel Canadian-made AI solutions to accelerate domestic energy innovation; Develop and use AI solutions to lower the cost, time, and/or energy use of traditional methods to advance new energy innovations; Bring together AI and energy technology innovators to promote knowledge exchange; and Promote Canadian energy data availability, accessibility, and security across the energy innovation ecosystem.
Leveraging over fifty years of experience and unique science and technology expertise, the Office of Energy Research and Development (OERD) leads the Government of Canada’s efforts in energy innovation and invests in impactful research, development, and demonstration projects that maximize environmental and economic outcomes. OERD’s programs target four missions to realize a clean energy future: improving energy efficiency and processes to reduce emissions from energy end-use, accelerating electrification and maximizing renewable power benefits, developing cleaner fuel pathways, and reducing reliance on diesel in rural, remote, and Indigenous communities.
Funding will cover up to 75% of total project costs, with a minimum contribution of $500,000 and a maximum of $1,500,000. The funding period runs from April 1, 2026, to March 31, 2030. The application process consists of two stages: an Expression of Interest (EOI) phase open to all eligible applicants and a Full Project Proposal (FPP) phase open only to invited applicants.
In June 2025, during the G7 Leaders’ Summit in Kananaskis, Alberta, Prime Minister Carney announced Canada’s commitment of $10 million to invest in AI technologies and solutions that accelerate energy innovation domestically. Natural Resources Canada, through the Energy Innovation Program, is delivering on this commitment through the new Call for Proposals. This initiative is designed to bridge Canada’s strengths in AI and energy innovation by encouraging interdisciplinary collaborations among academia, industry, and non-profit organizations.
Successful projects under this Call will bring together innovators from diverse backgrounds to create meaningful partnerships and utilize AI-driven solutions that enhance Canada’s energy innovation ecosystem. Funded projects may also receive non-financial support, including opportunities for networking, knowledge sharing, and business development to amplify their impact.
