The focus areas of the opportunity are empowering, engaging, and connecting young people to lead Kenya’s green and digital transitions driving inclusive growth, innovation, and civic participation; addressing unemployment, underemployment, and limited civic participation; strengthening formal training in digital literacy, green economy, entrepreneurship, and leadership; building opportunities for mentorship, incubation, and internships for youth, especially rural youth and persons with disabilities; supporting sustainable and commercially viable enterprises with potential for smart approaches to business growth; creating decent employment opportunities for youth and women; and fostering understanding of renewable energy, nature-based solutions, circular economy, and sustainable agriculture value chains.
The Sheria Ya Vijana Project is a nationwide youth empowerment initiative that aims to equip young people with the skills and opportunities needed to actively contribute to Kenya’s green and digital transformation. The project will directly reach 5,875 young people, including 60% women and 3% persons with disabilities, while indirectly benefiting more than 1.8 million youth across the country.
The Kenya Climate Innovation Center (KCIC), acting as the enterprise development partner, is currently inviting applications from youth-led organisations, social enterprises, and youth networks based in Nairobi and Kwale counties to join the program. Selected applicants will gain access to enterprise development support designed to strengthen sustainable business models and enhance economic participation for young people.
Eligible applicants include youth entrepreneurs between the ages of 18 and 29, and persons with disabilities between 18 and 35, who operate income-generating activities aligned with the program guidelines and have been in operation for at least 12 months. Applicants must demonstrate a feasible business model with potential to scale sustainably, adopt smart business approaches, and contribute meaningful social impact through decent job creation for youth and women.
Applications are also open to registered and unregistered youth-led community-based organisations, self-help groups, civil society organisations, and small and medium-sized enterprises engaged in renewable energy, nature-based solutions, circular economy, and sustainable agriculture value chains. All enterprises must be green and digitally smart, legally operating in Nairobi or Kwale counties, and prepared to undergo due diligence prior to offer of placement in the program.
