Deadline: December 11, 2025
BHP, a leading global resources company, and Steel Authority of India Limited, India’s largest government-owned steel producer, invite proposals for the development of a Global Centre of Excellence for Steel Decarbonisation.
The focus of this initiative is to advance R&D to optimise existing steelmaking operations, build capabilities in emerging low-carbon technologies such as hydrogen-rich gas use, biomass utilisation, and top gas recycling, develop a knowledge hub and foster collaborations between Indian and international research partners, and create opportunities for Women in STEM and train the next generation of experts in sustainable steelmaking.
This initiative is funded by BHP’s Climate Investment Program and supported by SAIL. It is designed to accelerate innovation, research, and knowledge sharing to help decarbonize the steel industry, which is one of the most critical sectors for climate action in India. The programme also aims to bring together global expertise with local capacity building to strengthen India’s pathway to sustainable steel production.
In addition to research and development, the Global Centre of Excellence will act as a hub for collaboration, connecting Indian and international research partners. By linking expertise across borders, the initiative seeks to generate solutions that are practical, scalable, and impactful for the future of steelmaking.
The emphasis on training and inclusion of women in STEM further underlines the commitment to building a diverse and skilled workforce, ensuring that sustainable steelmaking is driven by broad participation and next-generation leadership.
