Deadline Date: November 11, 2025
The LOT 29 – Driving the Future: Entrepreneurial Models for Circular Battery Innovation in Electric Mobility program invites private sector partners to develop entrepreneurial models for circular battery innovation in Kenya, aiming to create commercially viable, impactful, and scalable business solutions while addressing the growing need for sustainable EV battery management.
Focus Areas: Collection, Logistics and Distribution: How might they build safe and efficient reverse logistics networks and digital tracking systems? Repair, Repurposing and Re-manufacturing: How might they develop affordable testing, repair, and assembly systems for second-life battery use? Recycling Solutions: How might they set up small, modular recycling systems for local black mass recovery? Skills Development & Centre of Excellence: How might they establish a national hub for testing, innovation, business model development, and training?
Kenya’s electric mobility adoption is accelerating, with registered EVs doubling in both 2023 and 2024. The upcoming implementation of the national e-mobility policy is expected to drive further growth across the sector. While the numbers of end-of-life EV batteries are currently low, mainly from two-wheelers, volumes are projected to rise significantly, surpassing 150 tonnes by 2030. Companies recognize the importance of building local systems for reusing and recycling EV batteries early to prevent unsafe disposal, rising costs, and to unlock economic opportunities from critical raw materials, new business models, and green employment.
Energy and recycling companies have previously focused on reusing lithium-ion batteries from off-grid solar systems. With the rise of electric vehicles, these companies are now expanding their EV battery activities to include repurposing, repair, and remanufacturing, as well as developing an EV battery recycling value chain. To achieve success, they are seeking reliable partners, technology providers, and business model innovators to co-develop scalable solutions in the identified business cases.
Lot 29 offers participants a clearly defined business opportunity and access to a new market, direct access to customers, and a strong network to other key actors, along with product development support. The innovation sprint for this program is scheduled from December 2-5, 2025, in Nairobi, with the exact venue to be announced.
