Deadline Date: April 02, 2026
The National Research Council of Canada is inviting proposals to support the development of critical technologies in quantum networking, aiming to advance the vision of a quantum-enabled Canada.
The program focuses on collaborative projects that push technological boundaries and establish the building blocks for a future national quantum network. Priority areas include applied quantum materials and integration, quantum components and devices, interfaces, transducers and interconnects, and systems and demonstrations. The objectives emphasize overcoming scientific and engineering barriers to robust, scalable quantum networks, closing technological gaps at every length scale, and enabling interconnected quantum computers and sensors.
The QUIN Challenge program is designed to foster collaboration between NRC researchers and external applicants, including academic institutions, research organizations, not-for-profits, and Canadian small and medium-sized enterprises. It seeks research outcomes directly relevant to building quantum networks, supporting projects that integrate advances into functioning networks, whether on-chip, within data centres, across metropolitan fibre networks, or even satellite-based links. The program prioritizes projects that enhance quantum interconnects, devices, and systems, while early-stage work is only considered when it has clear downstream benefits.
Funding of up to $5,000,000 is planned, with individual recipients eligible for up to $500,000 over three years in non-repayable grants and contributions. Eligible costs include salaries for highly qualified personnel, consumable materials, equipment under and over $10,000, research support costs, travel directly associated with the project, contractor fees, and indirect costs up to 10% of total eligible project expenses.
This initiative is part of the Collaborative Science, Technology and Innovation Program, leveraging NRC expertise to deliver breakthroughs that matter to Canadians while advancing knowledge and applying leading-edge technologies. By connecting the Canadian quantum ecosystem, the QUIN Challenge aims to lay the foundation for a national quantum network that enables seamless transmission of quantum information across all scales.
