Call for Applications: CommuniCity Smart City Pilot Projects

Submissions are now open for the CommuniCity Smart City Pilot projects to provide innovative solutions responding to the needs of cities and communities, leveraging digital technologies.

CommuniCity project aims to launch one hundred pilots during the years 2023–2024. The third round of CommuniCity Open Call for Applications takes place between 10 September and 31 October 2024. This will fund up to 66 pilots that will be carried out alongside Partnering Cities, Amsterdam, Helsinki and Porto, as well as with Replicator Cities of Aarhus, Bruges, Brussels, Cuneo, London, Manchester, Matosinhos, Milazzo, Plock, Prague, Sant Boi de Llobregat, Sarajevo, The Hague and Utrecht.

The use of Artificial Intelligence and advanced analytics will be considered an added value. For societal change to occur, there must be opportunities for dialogue between citizens, associations, city officials, and policymakers. The CommuniCity project empowers marginalised communities to decrease the digital gap through initiatives that they can partake in, such as open calls and pilots, for projects based on the needs and priorities of these communities.

Challenge Types

  • In total, there are 54 challenges presented, all of which are open to all eligible applicants:
    • Aarhus: How can youth interaction with public authorities be more inclusive?
    • Amsterdam: How can a chatbot support parents navigating a high -conflict divorce?
    • Amsterdam: How can migrants with dementia stay fit and learn to train their memory?
    • Amsterdam: How to help residents to overcome poverty and debt?
    • Amsterdam: How to keep the volunteers and partIciponts of the Rainbow Group better connected?
    • Amsterdam: How to support residents facing domestic violence?
    • Amsterdam: How to support the “joint journey” of the volunteers and parlicipants of the Rainbow Group?
    • Amsterdam: – How can an Al solution solve a challenge faced by a marginalised group?
    • Bruges How to engage young migrants in oty planning?
    • Brussels How to communicate in a more accessible way?
    • Brussels. How to simplify the parking procedures for residents with reduced mobillty?
    • Cuneo: How can the well-being of young people in remote locations be enhanced?
    • Cuneo: How to faclitate sports practice among young people with limited financial resources?
    • Cuneo: How to provide isolated communities with sunainable food logistics?
    • Hague: How can Digital Day Programs enhance well-being?
    • Hague: How can MaaS enable better transportation services?
    • Hague: How can new assistive technologies enable better mobility?
    • Helsinki: How can patient well-being and monitoring be improved?
    • Helsinki: How can robotics solutions provide assistance to patients?

Funding Information

  • The final open call has a budget of around €820,000. Selected pilot teams will receive grants of up to €12,500 to develop their technological solutions and conduct real-life experiments in collaboration with residents. The third CommuniCity Open Call aims to award grants to over 60 pilot teams.
