Deadline Date: November 10, 2025
The AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative, in collaboration with GIZ, the Ministry of Health, and the Ghana Health Service, invites software developers, health-tech start-ups, and digital innovators to participate in the AYA Innovation Challenge themed “Designing the Future of Patient Self-Care.”
The Innovation Challenge aims to identify or adapt a comprehensive patient self-management ICT tool suitable for integration into GHS systems, strengthen patient empowerment and data-driven care for hypertension and diabetes, and support sustainable, open-source, and locally adaptable innovations with potential for nationwide deployment.
The initiative responds to a needs assessment that revealed strong interest among both patients and healthcare providers in a simple digital tool to help manage hypertension and diabetes. The selected solution will be developed collaboratively between the Ghana Health Service and the chosen software developer, ensuring a Ghana-owned and sustainable tool that improves the continuum of care for non-communicable diseases. The winning innovation will receive a €100,000 grant from the AYA Integrated Healthcare Initiative to refine, scale, and integrate the tool within Ghana’s health system.
Eligible applicants include software development firms and tech start-ups with a ready-designed, prototype, or fully developed digital health solution for patient self-management of blood pressure and blood glucose. Legally registered developers and technology teams with experience in mobile or web application development, digital health innovation, or health information systems integration are encouraged to apply. Local Ghanaian developers are strongly encouraged, while international applicants must demonstrate a clear strategy for local implementation support and capacity transfer to Ghanaian partners.
Applicants must be willing to transfer ownership rights of the developed solution to the Ghana Health Service and/or Ministry of Health upon project completion, ensuring open-source accessibility, sustainability, and compliance with Ghana’s data protection, cybersecurity, and interoperability standards.
