The Office of Medical Research and Innovation is requesting grant applications for its Research Infrastructure Program to support eligible Responsible Entities in meeting the indirect costs necessary for delivering high-quality health and medical research in Western Australia.
Focus areas, supporting indirect research costs such as administrative, technical, and support staff and the operation of research facilities, services, and equipment; building a sustainable research foundation for research development, translation, commercialisation, and economic growth; promoting excellence in health and medical research in Western Australia; increasing the capacity of the WA research sector to deliver world-class health and medical research; attracting and retaining high-quality researchers; creating employment opportunities; increasing competitiveness in national and international funding; and increasing research translation and commercialisation.
The Program provides funding of up to $10 million, excluding GST, to finance activities over a 12-month period during the 2026 calendar year. Funding is delivered through two streams. Stream 1 has a total funding pool of $17.5 million, including $10 million allocated to medical research institutes only under Stream 1A and $7.5 million allocated to medical research institutes, universities, and hospitals under Stream 1B. Stream 2 provides a funding pool of $7.5 million for medical research institutes, universities, health service providers, public-private partnership providers, and private hospitals. Eligible recipients receive a percentage of the relevant funding pool.
To be eligible, the Responsible Entity must have an active Australian Business Number, a physical and operational presence in Western Australia, and be a WA university, WA medical research institute, WA health service provider, private hospital, or WA public-private partnership provider. Applicants must have appropriate financial and accounting arrangements, no overdue reports from previous related programs, and must not operate in industries that contribute to poor physical health or mental wellbeing. Grant funding must not represent the entire financial base of the organisation.
Additional eligibility requirements apply depending on the type of organisation. Medical research institutes must be legally established in WA, operate as distinct entities, have secure premises, and employ a Scientific Director with a consistent record of peer-reviewed grant funding. Universities must be TEQSA-registered, operate a local WA campus, and oversee health and medical research through a Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research or equivalent. Health service providers, private hospitals, and public-private partnership providers must deliver health services in WA and oversee research through a Director of Research or equivalent, with applications submitted at the appropriate organisational level. All applications must meet the eligibility criteria and be submitted in accordance with the application instructions.
