Deadline Date: December 12, 2025
The Malta Enterprise, as the donor and facilitator of this initiative, has introduced a new grant scheme to support Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (SMEs) in developing strategies for international growth.
The scheme provides non-repayable grants to help cover costs incurred for external services that assist enterprises in creating a comprehensive internationalisation strategy. By leveraging these strategies, SMEs can enhance efficiency, competitiveness, and their ability to operate in global markets.
The scheme will remain operational until 31st December 2026, subject to the availability of funds. The initial budget allocated is €500,000. Grants are available up to a maximum of €20,000 per undertaking. Enterprises may submit two applications: one for Part 1 (studying opportunities abroad) with a grant cap of €10,000, and a second for Part 2 (strategy for selected country/countries), with the combined total not exceeding €20,000.
The Internationalisation Strategy under this scheme is divided into two key parts. The first part focuses on studying opportunities abroad, including business overview, market analysis, feasibility assessment, and recommendations for international market focus. The second part is a detailed strategy for a selected country or countries, covering country-specific analysis, market entry planning, marketing and sales approaches, financial and operational planning, and risk management including monitoring and evaluation.
This grant scheme aligns with Policy Objective 1 of the SFC2021 Programme 2021-2027, which aims to create a more competitive and smarter Europe by promoting innovative economic transformation and regional ICT connectivity. It also targets enhancing sustainable growth and competitiveness of SMEs, supporting job creation, and facilitating the economic exploitation of new ideas. By encouraging SMEs to expand internationally, the scheme contributes to fostering entrepreneurship and building resilient, innovative businesses.
Eligible applicants include micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises engaged in economic activity, regardless of legal form. For Part 1 applications, enterprises must demonstrate at least one year of active trading prior to the application date. Additionally, enterprises without legal personality under applicable law must be registered under the Second Schedule of the Civil Code (CAP 16 of the Laws of Malta).
This grant scheme offers a valuable opportunity for SMEs to strategically expand their operations internationally, strengthen competitiveness, and contribute to Europe’s innovative economic transform.
